Is enforcing current immigration law a new third rail of politics?

With the failure of the recent shamnesty bill you would think the Feds would just dust themselves off and get to work enforcing current law, right? Wrong. I suggest doing so is a political hot potato since it includes no path to citizenship for the current crop of illegals and politicians are scared to death thinking of the political price to pay when the current crop fulfills its destiny of legalization. What do you think?
