Hmmm, like the other answer, a birthday party might not be the right forum. But, you know your friends best, so here’s an idea.
Prepare the ‘topics’ that you know will be a heated source of discussion on index cards. Gather everyone around a table, or living room, floor, etc. Pull the card- let’s say it says Birth control handed out in the schools. There’s your topic to discuss and debate. After the conversation died down, pull the next card. Let’s say this one says Illegal immigrants not granted health care benefits. There’s your next topic of discussion, because in this country, a hospital won’t turn you away-especially a child.
If you prepare your own cards with the topics, you control the issues and can avoid the politics.
