I totally agree.
The reason for this is because we have bred a nation of mindless followers. A mass of sheep willing to listen what a charismatic figure has to say and beleive it despite the little voice in their head telling them that it is wrong. As Americans, we have blocked that little voice out, becoming dependent and manipulated by others.
We must stand up for what we beleive in and forget about our reputation. Very few historical icons got there because of following the crowd.
